Attendance

Green Meadows Academy recognises that some of our pupils have complex medical difficulties, which impact on attending school regularly. In such circumstances we are keen to support you by home visits, attendance plans or referrals to external support organisations such as the Medical Needs Teaching Service (MNTS) or the SILC Cluster support.

We take your child’s attendance at school very seriously and encourage you to call school as soon as possible if your child is unwell and will not be attending school.

Should your child’s attendance become problematic, we may have to refer to the local authority for additional specific support.

As with all schools we are unable to sanction a family holiday in school term time.

Absences

Please notify us if your child is absent as soon as possible by telephone on 0113 8313 222 on each day of absence.

If your child is unexpectedly absent and we have not received a telephone call by 9.15am, we will ring you in order to ascertain the child’s whereabouts.

If you are struggling with your child attending school please speak to your child’s class teacher so that we are able to help you and your child solve any issues that may have occurred.

Holidays During Term Time

Government legislation means that schools are not allowed to authorise requests for children to be taken out of school for a holiday during term time.  Requests for leave can only be granted by schools if there are exceptional circumstances, and holidays are not considered exceptional.

Requests for leave must also be made to the school in advance, as the Department for Education has told schools that they cannot authorise any absences after they have been taken.

A penalty notice is a fine to parents or carers if they fail to ensure that their child/ren attend school regularly. Leeds City Council is responsible for issuing penalty notices on behalf of schools in the city.

If a penalty notice is issued, it will be one fine to cover the whole period of the absence. So the fine would be the same amount for an absence of five days or 10 days. For example, a parent could be issued with a £60 fine if their child misses one day of school each week over a five week period, whilst another parent might be issued the same fine for one two-week block of absence.

Penalty fines are £60 per child per parent if paid within 21 days, and £120 if paid between 22 and 28 days. If the fine is not paid, parents will be reported for prosecution.

Illness and Accidents

If your child is ill please keep them at home to prevent the spread of contagious illness. In the event of sickness or diarrhoea, please keep your child away from school for 48 hours, if unsure please check the website Health Protection Agency with guidance for Infection Control In Schools. If your child is taken ill in school our policy is to contact you by telephone, so that you can collect your child and take them home. For this purpose we ask that you complete our contact form so that we can get in touch with at least one parent or carer.

It is also helpful if we can have a nearby relative or friend’s telephone number and address so that we can contact them if the parents are unobtainable. It is very important that we are kept informed of changes of address, working hours or other circumstances that could affect your child in school. If an accident happens and a child sustains a serious injury, first aid will be given and we will contact you and call an ambulance if appropriate.
